A lot of theme based restaurants litter the streets, like the Sloboda
which specialises in the traditional fare and culture of Russia.
Top notch restaurants like the Borodino which is a real theme style
restaurant that reflects the victory that Russia had over Napoleon,
and there is Boris Yeltsin’s favourite, the Tsarskaia Okhota
which has a hunting theme to the place, while the Serebrianyi Vek
(translated silver century) has great dishes, and the Pushkin is
a favourite with the middle classes. Fuji is an exciting Japanese
restaurant, while Le Gastronome has fantastic international cuisine
(seafood and especially shark) and is worth a visit. More themed
bars are the likes of Khlestakov Traktir, which is a tavern like
place that attracts the bohemian types. The Oblomov is centred
on a famous Russian literary work, while the Godunov can be found
down in a basement dating back to the 1770s. The restaurant called
Red Square 1 is very central and very popular with the tourists.
It is in a fine 19th century style house.
For a bit of the local cuisine, try out the borshch (beetroot
soup) for starters and maybe then the pelmeni (ravioli). Also pickled
fish is quite a popular starter, and the main course is usually
a meat based dish with potatoes or rice alongside cabbage salad
or baton carrots.
