The Red Square is exactly where the historic heart of Moscow is located,
and where most of the turbulent history of Russia has been fought
out, whether in Red Square in front of the public or else behind
the large walls of the Kremlin. Great events have been witnessed
here. It is a very impressive square as one must have seen a glimpse
of it on TV as it is a very unique sight, and it is well worth
coming to Moscow to stand in the square and witness all the exquisite
surroundings around you. The multi coloured onion shaped domes
of St. Basil Cathedral takes your breath away. On the left of the
square is the huge pale edifice of the GUM department store and
on the right is the imposing wall of the Kremlin where beneath
them is the Mausoleum of Lenin. The mix of historic and modern
Russia is entangled here as well as the State and the church and
also the styles of Europe and Russia to make this area a fascinating
location to spend a few days if not weeks here.
The commercial area called Kitai -Gorod use to be where all
the rich and most powerful resided in the city, but they eventually
moved elsewhere and now it is the main area for shops, banks
and commercial stores. If one looks around, one will find a rich
historical legacy left in this area by the amount of church and
several old palace buildings, like the Chambers in Zariade where
the Romanov Boyars use to live and one can also see the Church
of the Trinity here. |
